AFIC offers a variety of services, facilities and equipment to commercially-produce many types of processed products. Shelf-stable commercial products can be produced in jars, metal cans and flexible pouches. many of these services are discussed below.

Labeling

AFIC staff can provide help assuring that your label conforms to the requirements described in the FDA Food Labeling Guide.

Nutrition Facts Panel: AFIC staff also can provide help preparing the Nutrition Facts panel for your label ($30/label). Use this link to request this information:

Please remember, your Nutrition label will only be accurate if you provide us with all of the information requested on the form. We must have a list of all product ingredients and the weight (preferably metric) of each. All information provided to AFIC for use in label development remains confidential.

Disclaimer: AFIC uses the Genesis Database computer program for developing nutrition labels. This program is highly accurate and is used by many major food processors for nutritional label development. However, the accuracy of the labels developed will be dependent on the correctness and detail of the information provided for label development. AFIC is not responsible for errors in labels.

 

Analytical Service

Testing sugar content of jellyServices available include:

  • pH of acidified canned foods | Measuring the pH/acidity ($20/sample)
  • Aw (water activity) for low moisture foods | Measures the water activity ($30/sample)
  • Viscosity (temperature based) | Measuring viscosity of product ($50/sample)
  • Brix (soluble solids) for jams and jellies | Measuring the sugar level ($20/sample)

Product Analysis & Process Authority Certification

AFIC staff can provide analysis of your product(s) to determine appropriate data for a Process Authority Certification letter. The letter is required by the FDA upon filling out form 2541E. Examples of acidified products that require the letter are most barbecue sauces and salsas. To start this process, complete the Product Classification Form. When completing this form, you must provide a list of all product ingredients and the weight (preferably metric) of each. In addition, your process description must include all process steps. After review of your form, AFIC will contact you with further instructions. All information provided to AFIC for use in analysis remains confidential.
